Salma Hayek had her first large Hollywood role with Robert Rodriguez's Desperado. Then, she rose to prominence with Frida and an Academy Award nomination. Hayek is also involved in television, most particularly as the executive producer of Ugly Betty. Salma Hayek Jimenez, daughter of Spanish and Lebanese parents, was born in Mexico on the 2nd of September 1996 in Coatzacoalcos. Hayek was raised in a wealthy Catholic family. The convent she attended when she was 12 years old in Louisiana and then lived in Houston with her aunt through her teenage years. Then, in Mexico City she briefly attended university, but left to pursue acting. She eventually became a star of Mexican telenovelas. Her first roles in films Hayek was determined to master her English and move to Los Angeles and achieve Hollywood celebrity status. The year 1991 saw her move there. After small gigs, she landed a role in the film Desperado with Antonio Banderas in 1995's Desperado.
